More Lethbridge homeowners are asking about metal roofing — and for good reason. Metal handles high wind well, sheds snow quickly and can last a very long time. It's not the right fit for every house or every budget, though. Here's an honest look at metal roofing in Southern Alberta, plus a smaller upgrade that a lot of shingle roofs benefit from: open metal valleys.
Why consider metal roofing in Lethbridge?
- Wind. Properly fastened metal panels don't lift and tear the way older shingles do in Chinook gusts.
- Snow and ice. Snow slides off metal, which helps with heavy loads and ice damming at the eaves.
- Long life. A well-installed metal roof can outlast several shingle roofs.
- Low maintenance. No granules to lose, no seal strips to fail.
- Fire resistance — worth thinking about on acreages and mountain cabins.
The honest downsides
- Cost. Metal costs more up front than architectural shingles.
- Hail dents. Large hail can dent metal. It's usually cosmetic, but check how your insurance handles cosmetic damage.
- Snow sliding off. Snow can come off in one big sheet. Snow guards over doors and walkways help.
- Complex roofs. Lots of valleys, dormers and penetrations add labour and cost.
If you're staying in the house long-term and want a "do it once" roof, metal is worth pricing. If you're planning to sell in a few years, architectural shingles usually make more financial sense. We'll price both and let you decide.
Open metal valleys: a smart upgrade for shingle roofs
Valleys — where two roof slopes meet — carry more water than any other part of the roof. In spring, and during every Chinook melt, snow melt pours down them. That's why valleys are one of the most common places for leaks and early wear.
With an open metal valley, a pre-formed metal channel runs down the valley over ice and water protection. Shingles are trimmed back on each side, so water and slush run off on the metal instead of across shingle edges. Benefits:
- Water and ice move off the roof faster
- Less wear on the shingles in the valley
- Debris doesn't catch as easily
- A clean, sharp look that a lot of homeowners like
You can add open metal valleys to any roof replacement. Ask Chris to price it on your quote.

Metal for garages, cabins and outbuildings
Metal is a natural fit for detached garages, shops and mountain cabins, where snow load and long life matter most. If you're doing the house in shingles, a metal garage roof can be a good-value option too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is metal roofing worth it in Lethbridge?
It can be. Metal handles wind well, sheds snow quickly and lasts a long time. It costs more up front than asphalt shingles, so it makes the most sense if you plan to stay in the house a long time. We'll price both so you can compare.
What are open metal valleys?
A valley is where two roof slopes meet and the most water runs. In an open metal valley, a strip of metal runs down that channel and the shingles are cut back on each side. Water and snow melt run off on the metal instead of working into the shingles.
Is a metal roof noisy in hail or rain?
Over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic, most homeowners don't notice much difference from a shingle roof. Hail on metal is louder than on shingles, but it is rarely a problem inside a finished home.
Does hail dent metal roofing?
Large hail can dent metal, especially lighter-gauge panels. Dents are usually cosmetic and don't cause leaks, but check how your insurance policy treats cosmetic damage. Ask us about panel options if hail is a big concern.
How much does a new roof cost in Lethbridge?
It depends on the size and pitch of your roof, how many layers have to come off, whether the decking needs replacing and which shingle you pick. For a real example, we did a complete house + garage re-roof for $8,400. The only way to get your number is a free, written quote — call (403) 929-5588.
Can you roof in the winter?
Yes — we work year-round, including winter. Southern Alberta gets plenty of workable winter days, especially during a Chinook. We watch the forecast, use the right installation methods for cold weather, and won't install in conditions that would hurt the roof.
What warranty do I get?
The shingles carry the IKO manufacturer warranty for the product line you choose, and we stand behind our workmanship. Chris explains exactly what's covered and puts it in writing with your quote.
What does cleanup look like?
Every job ends with our Yard-Clean Promise: a magnetic nail sweep of the lawn, driveway and beds, all debris hauled away, and a final walkthrough with you. Your yard is safe for kids and pets the moment we leave.
