Architectural Shingles vs 3-Tab: Upgrading Your Lethbridge Roof

If your house was built or last re-roofed before the mid-2000s, there's a good chance it has 3-tab shingles. They were the standard for decades — flat, thin, cut into three tabs per strip. They work, but in Lethbridge they have a tough life. When it's time for a new roof, the question almost everyone asks is: should I upgrade to architectural shingles?

What's the difference?

3-tab shingles

A single layer of asphalt-coated mat, cut into three equal tabs. They're lighter and cheaper, and they lie flat with a uniform, brick-like pattern. Typical life is around 15–20 years, and a typical wind rating is about 100 km/h (≈60 mph).

Architectural (laminate) shingles

Two or more layers laminated together, so they're thicker and heavier. The layers create a dimensional, shadowed look that reads more like wood shake or slate from the street. Depending on the product line and installation, they're rated up to roughly 210 km/h (≈130 mph) , and they generally last longer and handle impact better.

Why it matters more in Lethbridge

Shingle choice matters more here than in most of Canada, for three reasons:

  • Wind. Lethbridge is one of the windiest cities in the country. Chinook gusts regularly hit 100 km/h and sometimes much higher. That's right at — or over — what a 3-tab shingle is built for. It's why so many older roofs in town lose shingles every winter.
  • Hail. Southern Alberta storms between June and August can bruise and crack shingles. Thicker laminate shingles take a hit better than thin 3-tab.
  • Freeze-thaw. A Chinook can take you from -20°C to +10°C in a day and back again. Those swings stress shingles and seal strips. A heavier shingle with a strong seal holds up better.

Put those together and the "cheaper" shingle often isn't cheaper over the life of the roof — not once you add a few wind repairs and an earlier replacement.

What does the upgrade cost?

On a full re-roof, most of the cost is labour, tear-off, underlayment, flashing and disposal — that's the same whichever shingle you pick. The shingle upgrade itself is usually a modest share of the total. Your written quote will show the price for each option side by side so you can decide.

IKO architectural shingles

We install IKO shingles. Popular colours on recent jobs include Dual Grey, Dual Brown and Charcoal Grey — they suit most Lethbridge siding and brick, and they hide dirt and weathering well.

Chris brings samples to your house and explains the differences between product lines — wind rating, weight, warranty and look — so you can make the call yourself. No pressure and no upsell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost over 3-tab?

In Lethbridge, usually yes. The price difference on a typical house is modest compared to the whole job, and you get a much higher wind rating, better impact resistance, a longer life and a better-looking roof. With our Chinook winds, 3-tab shingles tend to need repairs much sooner.

Can I put architectural shingles over my old 3-tab shingles?

We don't recommend it. We tear off the old roof down to the deck so we can replace any bad boards and give the new shingles a flat, solid base to seal to. Layering over old shingles hides problems and shortens the life of the new roof.

What wind speed are architectural shingles rated for?

It depends on the exact product line and how it's installed. Architectural laminate shingles are rated up to roughly 210 km/h (about 130 mph), compared with around 100 km/h (about 60 mph) for basic 3-tab. Chris will show you the rating for the specific shingle on your quote.

Which shingle brand do you use?

We install IKO shingles. Recent jobs used colours like Dual Grey, Dual Brown and Charcoal Grey. Chris brings samples so you can see them against your house.

Do architectural shingles help with hail?

They're thicker and laminated, so they handle impact better than thin 3-tab. No asphalt shingle is hail-proof, though — a big enough storm will damage any roof. If hail is a major concern, ask about impact-rated options.

How much does a new roof cost in Lethbridge?

It depends on the size and pitch of your roof, how many layers have to come off, whether the decking needs replacing and which shingle you pick. For a real example, we did a complete house + garage re-roof for $8,400. The only way to get your number is a free, written quote — call (403) 929-5588.

What warranty do I get?

The shingles carry the IKO manufacturer warranty for the product line you choose, and we stand behind our workmanship. Chris explains exactly what's covered and puts it in writing with your quote.

What does cleanup look like?

Every job ends with our Yard-Clean Promise: a magnetic nail sweep of the lawn, driveway and beds, all debris hauled away, and a final walkthrough with you. Your yard is safe for kids and pets the moment we leave.
