Hail damage is the most common job we do. That's not surprising — Southern Alberta gets some of the most frequent, damaging hail in Canada, and Lethbridge sits right in it. Most storms hit between June and August, often late in the afternoon, and they can go from a few pea-sized stones to golf-ball hail in a couple of minutes.

The tricky part is that hail damage usually doesn't leak right away. A bruised shingle looks fine from the driveway. Over the next few months, the damaged spots lose their protective granules, the asphalt underneath gets cooked by the sun, and freeze-thaw cycles open small cracks. By the time water shows up on your ceiling, the storm is long gone and the damage is harder to prove.

What hail actually does to a roof

Asphalt shingles are covered in mineral granules that shield them from UV and weather. When a hailstone hits, it can:

  • Knock granules loose, leaving dark, soft-looking spots — called bruises — that age much faster than the rest of the roof.
  • Crack the shingle mat, which you often can't see without lifting the shingle.
  • Break the seal strip so shingles start lifting the next time a Chinook blows through.
  • Dent metal — roof vents, flashing, drip edge, eavestroughs and downspouts. Dents on soft metal are often the easiest way to show an adjuster how big the hail was.

Older 3-tab shingles tend to take it worst. If your roof is already 15+ years old, a decent storm can push it past the point where repair makes sense.

Our free hail damage inspection

Chris gets on the roof himself and checks every slope — not just the side you can see from the street. We look at shingles, ridge caps, vents, flashing, skylights and eavestroughs, and we take clear, dated photos of what we find.

Then we tell you honestly where you stand:

  • No real damage? We tell you. No point opening a claim for nothing.
  • Minor damage? We'll walk you through whether a repair or a claim makes more sense for you.
  • Significant damage? You get the photos and a detailed written estimate to take to your insurer.

Working with your insurance adjuster

Once you open a claim, your insurer sends an adjuster to look at the roof. We can meet them on site, point out the damage we documented and make sure nothing gets missed — a dented vent on the back slope or a cracked ridge cap is easy to overlook if nobody shows it to them.

We give you a detailed, line-by-line written estimate for the work: tear-off, any decking that needs replacing, underlayment, ice and water protection, shingles, vents and flashing, and cleanup. It's the same honest estimate whether you're paying yourself or claiming it.

To be clear: your insurance company decides what's covered, not us. We don't promise "free roofs", and we will never offer to cover or waive your deductible. That's your policy — and a roofer who plays games with it is a roofer to stay away from.

Replacing a hail-damaged roof

When the claim is approved, we schedule the job, tear the old roof off down to the deck and check the wood underneath. Soft or rotted boards get replaced. Then we install new underlayment and IKO architectural shingles , along with new vents, flashing and ridge caps.

Hail season is also the right time to upgrade. If you had 3-tab shingles, moving to a thicker architectural laminate shingle gives you better impact resistance and much better wind performance for the next storm. See how 3-tab and architectural shingles compare.

Most of the finished roofs in our project gallery started out as hail damage claims. Popular colours on recent hail jobs include IKO Dual Grey, Dual Brown and Charcoal Grey. Chris brings samples and walks you through the options so you can see them against your siding.

Don't wait until spring

It's tempting to put it off — especially if the storm came late in the summer. But Lethbridge winters are hard on a damaged roof. Chinooks can melt snow in an afternoon and refreeze it overnight, and every one of those cycles works water into cracked shingles and lifted seal strips. Ice damming at the eaves gets worse on a roof that's already compromised.

Many insurance policies also set a time limit for reporting storm damage. Get it inspected and documented while the damage is fresh, then decide. We work year-round, including winter, so the timing of your claim doesn't have to wait for summer.

Why homeowners call us after a storm

After a big hailstorm, every roofer in town is busy and some out-of-province crews show up knocking on doors. Here's what you get with a local Lethbridge roofer:

  • We answer. Call any time — including the night of the storm.
  • 20+ years of hands-on roofing experience. We know what real hail damage looks like and what it doesn't.
  • We'll beat any written estimate for the same materials and scope.
  • We're still here next year if you ever have a question about your roof.
  • A clean yard under our Yard-Clean Promise — magnetic nail sweep, debris haul-away and a final walkthrough.

I remember calling 3 companies, Chris responded immediately and had me an estimate within 1 day…

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

From the ground, look for dents on vents, flashing, eavestroughs and downspouts, and piles of shingle granules at the bottom of downspouts. On the roof, hail leaves dark bruises where granules have been knocked off, and can crack or split shingles. The surest way is a free inspection — we get on the roof and check every slope.

Is the hail inspection really free?

Yes. No charge and no obligation. If there isn't enough damage to justify a claim, we'll tell you straight. Call (403) 929-5588 to book.

Do you work with insurance companies on hail claims?

Yes. We inspect the roof for free, photograph the damage, provide a detailed written estimate and can meet your adjuster on site. Your insurer decides what is covered — we just make sure the damage is documented properly.

Will you waive my deductible or give me a free roof?

No. Your deductible is part of your insurance policy and you are responsible for it. Any roofer offering to "eat" your deductible is either padding the claim or cutting corners on your roof. We document the real damage and quote the real work.

How long do I have to file a hail claim?

It depends on your policy — many insurers set a time limit for reporting storm damage. Check your policy or call your broker, and get the roof inspected soon after the storm so the damage is documented while it is fresh.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Get a free inspection first. If there is no real damage, you avoid opening a claim for nothing. If there is, you call your insurer with photos and a clear picture of what happened.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most houses are done in a day or two, weather permitting. Bigger roofs, steep pitches, multiple layers or rotten decking add time. You get an expected timeline in your written quote, before anything starts.

What does cleanup look like?

Every job ends with our Yard-Clean Promise: a magnetic nail sweep of the lawn, driveway and beds, all debris hauled away, and a final walkthrough with you. Your yard is safe for kids and pets the moment we leave.
